In the interest of fixing what you have..
This would be a first step to isolating the problem. Knoppix boots
from CD and lives in RAM so if knoppix can configure your sound then
you can see what works and compare it to what does not work.
If you are not interested in that attempt to isolate the problem.
Then tell us if it was working previously and then tell us in detail
what changed.
Just the kernel ? Or did you upgrade other stuff as well ?
