[COLUG] Feisty Fonts

Admittedly, this is an area where I am not very well versed, but
perhaps someone will have an easy solution on the tip of their
tongue:
I'm trying to get an old Solaris program to run (from a Solaris box)
with the DISPLAY exported to Ubuntu 7.04 Gnome. This works fine when
exported to a Fedora Core 4 box, but the program needs to export some
fonts, and Ubuntu/Gnome doesn't seem to like them. When I do the
"xset +fp ..." (on Solaris) it reports:
/usr/openwin/bin/xset: bad font path element (#63), possible causes are:
(and then proceeds to list several causes, none of which
are the root cause in this case)
I believe the problem is that the fonts I am trying to add are bit-
mapped fonts (.pcf files), and the new Ubuntu/Gnome font engines
don't accept these anymore. The Ubuntu forum lists several ways
to resolve this, none of which have worked for me so far.
So, is there some way to get Feisty to accept these fonts, or
alternately, is there some way to convert them to some other
format that it will accept. Inquiring minds want to know.
Thanks in advance,
Rob
