This is the Ubuntu way. It has nothing to do with Gnome per se. 
It's controversial but there are folks on this list who do not use 
Ubuntu will tell you that using sudo is a good thing. Now's a good 
time for them to speak up. Here's the explanation of the Ubuntu way.

If you really want to be root shell, just execute: 

   sudo su -
