Okay, here are a few more details.

I created a new VM, on my primary SATA disk.  30G, all pre-created.  Same 
result.  Even before installing an OS, on bootup the vmware-vmx process 
pegs the CPU and I get a window with this msg:

Unable to change virtual machine power state: The 
"/usr/lib/vmware/bin-debug/vmware-vmx" process did not start properly
  Try running "/usr/lib/vmware/bin-debug/vmware-vmx 
/home/os/vmware/WindowsVistaUltimate/Windows Vista Ultimate.vmx" from the 
command-line on the server..

I attempted enabling debug logs, but could not find any logs in the VM's 
directory.  Might this have something to do with the fact that the PC is a 
Celron and not a Pentium?
