I echo Jim's laptop recommendations.  If I was looking for a new
laptop I would give consideration to Dell laptops and the Lenovo
Thinkpad series.

I avoid Sony at all costs.  I've worked for a couple of places where
we had an occasional Sony in use and they have always seemed to have
either some issue or be poor performing in comparison to other models
we had in use.  On top of that they always seemed to have had trouble
with clean Linux installs that just work, whereas I rarely have
trouble getting a good, functioning Linux install on Dell or Thinkpad
laptops I install on.
