[COLUG] GRUB boot issue

Since early December, I've been running a laptop with dual boot (XP/CentOS) 
successfully ... but last night I did a "shutdown -r" on the CentOS disk and 
the machine didn't come back up.  Instead of the pretty GRUB menu screen, all 
I get is the letters GRUB on a black screen, and nothing else.  In several 
hours of web searches, I didn't see any way to troubleshoot this.  I did check 
out the CentOS /boot/grub (by booting off of Knoppix), and everything looks right.

What else should I look for or look at?
