What you might try is this: download and compile, and install gutenprint 
with the prefix:

/opt/gutenprint-5.0.2

Then, generate the PPD from the library contained under that location, and 
set up your printer with the PPD itself (instead of choosing a 
make/model).  I did this under CentOS and it appeared to work (I posted 
about this a few weeks ago).  The only problem was weird printer colors. 
I emailed the gutenprint list, and they said that gimp-print and 
gutenprint libraries only work with PPD's built for that specific version 
- so, according to them, my system was using the libraries under 
/opt/gutenprint-5.0.2.  I haven't been able to solve the weird colors 
issue yet, but I haven't had time to look at it, either.
