This is a link I found a while back with details about soldering surface 
mount components.  It was once served from a Linux server.  In any case, 
it gives you an idea of the challenges in re-soldering a PCMCIA card riser 
on your motherboard.

It is probably not something I'd try - at this point I'd relegate the 
motherboard to server or other stationary, low-power use.
