The machine came back up without problems, and I tried to continue. It
told me that because it detected an interrupted installation I had to
run dpkg --configure -a by hand, so I did that. (Smart program.)

Seems to me when I had this problem I had to use sudo dpkg --configure
-a several times and possibly a reboot in there.
Also, a side issue, some of the programs will uninstall the KDE desktop
when you use them, so be careful that the uninstall size is not out of
line: ie, if it says will uninstall 400 packages consisting of 700 meg,
don't do it. If you don't catch it and uninstall any way, don't shut off
your computer, and reinstall the desktop, then it's ok to shut it down.
I was out of town one time when I did this and a local computer users
group in Florida let me reinstall using apt-get command line tools.
Thankfully, I had a second computer with me so I could find a users group.
