You might check out the Atmel Network Gateway Kit (less than $100.00) at:

Along with everything on the kit, it can rather easily be wired for a
directly connected LCD panel. You can add a CLUT chip and a VGA
connector to display on a standard LCD panel. We're using the chip in a
panel at work and it's working well for us.
