[COLUG] using rrdtool to look at you CPU and mother board temperatures.

I believe that only ACPI-enabled motherboards have these sensors available
via the chipset and available for query with the right query tools. I'm
thinking that the whole "energy star" compliant stuff started coming out
about 10-ish years back, and that would have been when manufacturers were
starting to release things like variable speed fans and instrumentation
around such for controlling them. I'm not a hardware guy, but I think ACPI
vs non-ACPI would be the differentiator.

Mine too - but I set it as a % of full power. My BIOS reads something like
if the CPU temperature is below some threshold {70C}, set fan speed at
{selectable: 100%, 90%, 80%, 70%. 60%, 50%}. And it also has another
threshold to shut down if the CPU temp reaches another temperature, and also
an action to take if the fan dies (or drops to 0rpm).

I was having that same problem with another domain, and was not getting a
NDR, just no posting ever appeared, and not showing up in the archive
either. I unsubscribed and came in under a different domain and problem was
solved.
