Thanks Jim,

It looks like the script that built /etc/issue on that box is a  
little over or under escaped.

[web at main ~]$ cat /etc/issue
CentOS release 4.6 (Final)
Kernel \r on an \m

/etc/redhat-release seems good..
[web at main ~]$ cat /etc/redhat-release
CentOS release 4.6 (Final)
