You are exactly right about volume,  once you start adding services like
spam-assassin, clam-av, etc. the number of incoming smtp sessions that can
be handled is limited.  Especially if you run everything on one server, well
unless that server is multi-process, multi-core, large memory, and fast HDs.
 In other words, expensive.
