You don't have to spend a lot of money for a cheap cable tester, and
they are quite handy especicially if you do any of your own crimping:

But using a computer and switch works just as well assuming the cable
is pinned out correctly. I had Cat5e in my house also, but I had to
change the punch downs for Ethernet. Only 2 wires were originally
connected as it was wired out for phone service.
