I had run my own mail server since I got my vanity domain. I just
recently switched to Google for Domains, for some of the same reasons
as you.

Among other things, I grew tired of being responsible for my family's
email. It was hard to migrate to a new host, or make major
configuration changes without someone getting frustrated that their
email was interrupted. Letting Google handle all the infrastructure
for me has been a real boon.
It's taken me some time to get used to the web interface, but now I
quite like it.
