I probably should have read on before posting...

However, the link light solution is only good if there aren't other devices 
plugged in (an assumption I wouldn't make, given how my house is set up 
;-).  The toner solution is equivalent, except that it's based on gear he 
probably has in his house rather than having to borrow something.
