The mysterious (presumably to everyone but Jim and me) Franco was
indeed quite impressed by the P5K-E last fall, although just today
he mentioned to me that there were better motherboards available
now.
The on-board ethernet has proven itself solid. It's base on a
Marvell chipset. The only squabble I had with it was that Ubuntu
Feisty didn't seem to know how to control the LEDs on it. I haven't
looked behind the box recently to see if Hardy handles them better.
The P5K-E has no on-board graphics, just a PCI-E slot for the
graphics card of your choice. I elected to put an nvidia 7300 GT
in it. I let Ubuntu install the nvidia proprietary drivers, and
have been satisfied with the results, although I must confess I'm
not a heavy graphics user. I turn off Compiz and about the most
stress I give it is watching HDTV occasionally with VLC or dabbling
with Google Earth. My intent was to run dual heads, and the card
handles that fine.
The rest of the chipsets on the MB are basically Intel I believe,
except for a JMicron controller for the IDE bus, and the built-in
WiFi, which I also don't use -- in fact, never tried to use under
Linux.
YMMV,
Rob
