I don't really understand what the problem was/is beyond the system 
doing memory allocations for PCI space or something to a very high part 
that it probably shouldn't have, dunno, anyone interested in an actual 
explanation can have a look here:

That link also has a patch that works, although it's for 256M of vram, 
mine has 512M.

Anyways to fix it the following post explains how to do this the 
'debian' way:

Although his post indicates rebuilding the modules this isn't needed, 
only the kernel needs to be rebuilt.
