I saw this back in early 2000's on an AMD K6/2-350 board.  The thing was, 
it was only apparent under heavy load.

Under normal use, things were fine.  However, as soon as I went to compile 
something or play games (causing heavy X usage), I'd get compiler errors 
and artifacts on the screen.  Tweaking the memory usage did the trick.

This actually sounds a lot like what my wife's Dell laptop was doing when 
we sent it in.  Unfortunately, the fix was to replace the mobo + RAM.
