I haven't fallowed the thread all that close, but I'm pretty sure I'm
about to be the blasphemer...

While I understand and support the need and merits of fully open source
software and drivers, I have always had excellent experience with nvidia
cards and linux. I have never used the pre-compiled drivers for ubuntu,
fedora or mandrake/mandriva though. I have always downloaded the driver
tarball from nvidia and compiled the driver tarball. It can be a pain
when it comes to upgrades as it is compiled against the kernel and I
believe Xorg versions as well. But I have dual heads, dvi-hdmi @1080p
with full 3d and video support from a nvidia 8800 gts and linux with no
issues, ever.
