[COLUG] Switching ISP and needing advice...

In short, yes. You will very likely have problems with downstream MTAs accepting mail from an IP in dial-up ranges, even if you pay for a static. If you are paying for a static, you could be still in their dynamic range - but with a reservation that keeps your ip from floating around.

Ask the isp if they will set reverse dns for you, ask if their statics are on a separate range, etc.

Legitimate users of MTAs in ranges that are in the SORBS-DUL list can apply to be excluded from the list but that is not a guarantee that your ip isn't on someone elses DUL. SORBS is not the only provider of a RBL-based dial-up list. I believe Spamhaus also hosts a list.

There's also a popular custom rule for SpamAssassin called "Botnet" which does its own inspection of headers to see if you look like a bot sending spam.

As I said at the head, you will have issues.

Is sending mail directly from the house that big of a priority? Google Apps for the mail portion of the hosting solves a lot of this for you.

Subject: [COLUG] Switching ISP and needing advice...

Hello all!

I am contemplating a move from my current ISP (OneCommunications, 512
S-DSL) to another service (wowway, 2Mb Down, 356kb up).

Since I host a few small web sites and an e-mail server, will I have
problems having an fixed IP address in the wowway space (or any other
similar ISP)?

I have had problems in the past with client systems not wanting to
accept e-mail from servers with "residential" IP addresses.

Do you think I will have any problems?

Thanks!

Mark
