I have seen 'chown' reset the set-uid bit on files.
Dunno the origin of this behaviour, but it is annoying.
Also, if you blanketly 'chgrp' to "root" some important group IDs
will be lost.

You may need to back off and re-try this
because to find and correct every nuanced point of ID
is likely to take longer than a total re-installation.
Unless you simply want the education.  (I know people who would.)
