[COLUG] Hard Drive Brands??

I agree on Seagate and Hitachi.

And I believe, Seagate bought either WD or Maxtor (not sure which) but it only cost them $30 after they mailed in the rebate (LOL).

Although they're not in our market, I hear Fry's has really great deals on stuff. I recently saw a 750gb Seagate for like $159.

I know your question was towards reliability though... And I will say I have had both a WD and a Maxtor fail on me prematurely. And I have not had a Seagate fail on me. In my datacenter, most of the bad drives I replace have a Maxtor label on them.

I doubt your Green drive will be of "datacenter grade" or duty rating. I would also be tentative about buying Rev. 1 of a new technology such as variable spindle speed.

Forget the 5 watts and go for the reliability and performance. Instead, change one or more of your incandescant lights to a CFL, which is typically a 60watt bulb for the energy of ~15watts... I'm not against being green, but be smart about it. Not everything is "better" because it claims to be "green."

But that's just my opinion.

Howdy Folks,

Considering hard drives on which you'd install Linux: which have proven to
be most reliable?

The grapevine rates drive reliability thusly:

Seagate, new Hitachi DeskStars: Excellent
Maxtor, Western Digital: Bad

I'm looking for ~500GB SATA drive.

There are Western Digital GreenPower Caviar for $105 at MicroCenter.
They have a 3 year warranty. This is the first time I've seen 3 yr
warranty on WD models... and the GreenPower series are relatively new.
They claim a savings of 5 watts over the competition, which is something I
consider important. But they seem to alter between 5,400 and 7,200 RPM.
I wonder if they're rated for 24x7 operation?

Cheers,
-j
