The writers in Hollywood are some of the smartest, well-educated, and
culturally well-versed people you will ever meet. They know about
Linux and thousands of other esoteric concepts. However, they have to
write dumb TV that will be available to the lowest common denominator,
stuff they can pitch to producers.
It's like the scene in the Simpsons, where the writers and producers
of Itchy and Scratchy are having a meeting about Homer Simpson's
character, Poochy.
Producer: "This dog is the original Hell-Hound."
Writer: "You mean Cerberus, the three-headed guardian of Hades?"
Producer: --blank stare--
Writer: "I'm fired, aren't I?"
Producer: "Yes. Yes, you're all fired! Now, put your heads together,
and come up with a name for this dog, something like Poochy, only not
so cute."
Producer leaves the room.
Head Writer: "So, Poochy?"
Writers: "Yeah, sounds good."
The above is from memory, so it's not completely accurate.
